How much does random video chat actually cost?

4 min read

Every site in this category says it is free, and every site in this category makes money. Both of those are true at once, and the interesting question is where exactly the seam is. Here is how the money usually works, including ours.

Free almost always means "the first bit"

The near-universal model is: getting in is free, staying is not. You can open the site, get matched, and have a conversation without paying. Somewhere after that there is a wall — a timer, a credit balance, a feature that needs an account.

That is a reasonable business. What is not reasonable is calling it "100% free" on the homepage and only mentioning the wall once you have hit it. When you see "free forever" on a product that clearly costs money to run, you are reading marketing, not a price.

The three shapes prices come in

Subscriptions charge monthly whether you show up or not, and are the easiest to forget you are paying for. Credits or coins charge for what you use and stop when you stop. Pay-per-minute is the same idea with a more stressful clock.

Coins are the most common in this category because usage is wildly uneven — someone might have one conversation this year and forty next month.

Our numbers, so you can compare

DuoChat runs on coins. The smallest pack is $1.99 for 68 coins; $5.99 gets 228 with a small bonus, $19.99 gets 849 with a larger one, and the packs continue upward from there in your wallet. There is also a VIP option at $9.99 for 30 days that includes 719 coins.

Your first chat does not need an account or a card. There is no auto-renewing charge hidden in a settings page, and if you never buy a coin, nothing ever gets billed to you. We are not going to tell you it is free forever, because that would not be true.

  • Check the price page before you are emotionally invested, not after
  • Prefer models where not showing up costs nothing
  • Treat "100% free" on a paid product as a warning about everything else on the page
  • Buy the smallest pack first — the bonus on the big one is not a bargain if you use it twice

What is genuinely free here

Opening the site, being matched, skipping as many times as you want, reporting and blocking, and closing the tab. None of those has ever been the paid part on any site worth using, and none of them is here.
